IP address lookup: location, ISP and ASN of an IP

Look up an IP address: approximate city, region and country, time zone, ISP, ASN and connection type. Your own IP is free with no sign-up.

Leave the address empty to look up your own IP. Other addresses need an API token, which stays in this tab only; tokens are invite only for now.

What an IP lookup tells you

An IP address lookup matches an address against network data: who the address is assigned to and roughly where it is used. host.sh shows:

  • Location: approximate city, region, country and continent, postal code, latitude and longitude with an accuracy radius, and the time zone with its current local time.
  • Network: the ISP, the organization using the address, the autonomous system (ASN) it is announced from, and the connection type, for example Cable/DSL or Corporate.
  • Country facts: flag, EU membership, calling code and currency.

The response fields page explains every value.

Your IP and other IPs

With the address box empty, the lookup shows your own IP, for free and without a token, like curl host.sh in a terminal. Looking up any other address needs an API token. Tokens are invite only for now; a token you type in stays in this browser tab and is sent only to api.host.sh, as an Authorization: Bearer header.

With a token, the same lookup works from code: see lookup in the API docs for curl, JavaScript, Python, PHP and Go, and batch for up to 100 addresses at once.

How accurate is the location?

IP location is approximate. It is usually right about the country, often right about the region, and less often right about the city. For home and mobile connections the location can be where the provider's equipment is rather than where the person is. The accuracy radius (Accuracy above, geo.radius in the API) says how far off it may be, and a lookup never gives a street address.

FAQ

Can I look up any IP address for free?

Your own IP address, yes: without a token and without signing up. Other addresses need an API token, and tokens are invite only for now.

Does an IP lookup show someone's home address?

No. It shows an approximate area, often a city or region, and the network the address belongs to. The map marks that area, not a building.

What is an ASN?

An autonomous system number identifies a network on the internet, such as an ISP, a hosting provider or a large company. Every public IP address is announced by one, and the lookup shows its number and name.

Does it work for IPv6 addresses?

Yes, the lookup takes IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. To see your own IPv6 address and whether IPv6 works, use the IPv6 test.
